Using trucks or SUVs for passenger vehicles is a bad idea. They're more expensive than cars to buy and operate, and usually less safe. Many people use them for hauling equipment or towing boats or trailers and that's perfectly reasonable. This is what they're designed for. However, driving them to an office job or hauling a couple of kids to school is an expensive, unsafe proposition.
According to government crash tests, trucks and SUVs rate often highly for crash protection, but so do many cars. Few of those larger vehicles score well for rollover avoidance, however, and their extra weight means that they are much worse than cars at braking, swerving, or accelerating out of danger. The end result is that their drivers are more likely to need that high crash test rating.
